Wawrinka and Goffin go safely to 2nd round – AO 18

Wawrinka decided to play the first Grand Slam of the year in the last moment. The Swiss number 2 came to Australian Open without playing an official match in 6 months.

And indeed we could notice that Stan seemed rusty against Rikardas Berankis. The 3 times Grand Slam champion was fortunate enough to meet a slow player which lacks power as well.

The Stanimal played great when he hit the balls standing, but struggled when he had to hit from running. Whenever Stan had to run for the ball, he found himself going late to it. I believe that he still lacks confidence in his knee and it’s only natural.

Fortunately, his serve was a good ally which saved him in difficult moments. The few times he went to the net, he closed the points clinically. Overall a good match given the circumstances, as he advances, not without emotions, 6-3, 6-4, 2-6, 7-6 (2).

David Goffin continued his outstanding form, but had to seriously work for his victory against German Matthias Bachinger (182 ATP), 6-7 (3), 6-3, 6-2, 6-4.

Thomas Berdych made a statement on his injury comeback, as he ended the run of Australian teenager, Alex de Minaur, 6-3, 3-6, 6-0, 6-1, which entered the tournament by receiving a wild card.

The Doha champion, Gael Monfils, booked a match with Novak Djokovic, by dispatching the young Jaume Munar, 6-3, 7-6 (5), 6-4.

The first upset of the day came when Milos Raonic fell to Slovakian Lukas Lacko, 6-7 (5), 7-5, 6-4, 7-6 (4).

The disappointing form of the number 1 Canadian continues, as he is trying to get back to form from multiple injuries.
