The top players still continue to suffer from injuries. That’s a really bad sign, with 2018 knocking on the door.
World number 1, Rafa Nadal, still suffers from his old nemesis, his knee.
The Spaniard scheduled training sessions with Joao Sousa from 18-22nd of December. But he was forced to cancel them, as he admitted he is still not fit enough and still feels pain and discomfort. He preferred to train at his Academy from Mallorca.
After cancelling his training with the Portuguese, the King of clay was forced to pull out of the prestigious Abu Dhabi tournament.
The line-up was stacked with huge stars and seemed to be a great challenge for the top players to take the pulse of their level.
But Stan Wawrinka withdrew as well, as he claimed he is still not fit enough to compete, especially knowing what names he will have to battle.
The third blow for the event was when Milos Raonic quit as well. Not a big surprise, as all year was plagued by health issues.
Nadal will be replaced by Roberto Bautista Agut, Wawrinka by Kevin Anderson and Raonic by Next Gen Star, Andrey Rublev. The line-up will be completed by Djokovic, Carreno Busta and Thiem.
Abu Dhabi’s tournament is an exhibition one, but an event which always brought the interest of big stars. Since the first edition, 2009, Nadal won 4 titles (2010, 2011, 2015, 2016) and played another final. This is the 10th edition and will be the first one which Rafa will skip.
The Mubadala World Tennis Championship will be played from 28th till 30th of December 2017.
